Health watches promise a lot: pulse, oxygen saturation, sleep, fall detection. Much of it is real — and some of it is overrated. Anyone considering monitoring for their own parents deserves an honest reality check rather than a brochure. Here it is.
1. How wearables actually measure
Most health watches measure optically at the wrist: light sensors register subtle changes in blood flow, from which the watch calculates pulse and other values. That is remarkably capable — but it remains an estimate taken at the wrist, not a clinical measurement like the monitor of an intensive care unit. You need to know this difference to read the numbers correctly.
2. What they do well
- Continuity: a watch measures quietly in the background — day and night, without anyone having to think about it. No doctor's appointment captures everyday life this completely.
- Patterns and trends: activity, rest phases, resting heart rate over weeks — exactly the trends that matter for early detection (why trends matter more than single readings, explained here).
- Discretion: an elegant watch on the wrist does not stigmatise. It does not look like nursing equipment — and that is decisive for acceptance in daily life.
- Extra functions: some devices offer fall detection or irregularity notifications. As an additional layer of safety such functions are valuable — as the only safeguard they would be too little.
3. Where the limits are
- Single readings are error-prone. Movement, a loose strap, cold hands — all of this can distort momentary values. A single unusual reading is therefore, first of all, exactly that: a single reading.
- Many functions are wellness, not medicine. A large part of the health features of consumer devices is not designed as a diagnostic instrument — the manufacturers themselves say so. Diagnoses are made by doctors, not at the wrist.
- Numbers without context create anxiety. The watch does not know whether someone has just climbed the stairs. Without interpretation, raw data often gives relatives more worry than reassurance — up to alarm fatigue, where important signals get lost.
- A watch only works when it is worn and charged. It sounds trivial, but in the daily life of older people it is one of the most common weak points — and needs a routine that fits.
4. Gadget alone or system: the real difference
The decisive question is not which watch to buy. It is: who looks at the readings — and interprets them? A smartwatch on its own sends numbers to relatives who can hardly assess them professionally and should not have to do so around the clock. Wearables are real progress for the safety of older people — as a tool, not as the answer. They measure reliably enough to make trends visible, and too imprecisely to carry decisions on their own.
